BELVIDERE — “…Sue Gonia simply picked the dog that wasn’t barking when she adopted her newest pet.
On April 21, 2008, Boone County authorities charged Colin and Marie Slater with animal cruelty and began the seizure of dozens of animals, eventually brining in more than 100 dogs that roamed the farmland in rural Capron. The majority of the dogs were euthanized; they were too feral, aggressive or sickly to ever be adopted. The nearly discarded adoptees include the hapless, toothless and blind. They are the mangy survivors of an animal-cruelty case that turned a lucky few dogs into loved family pets…”  More
