CALIFORNIA ACTION ALERT: Help protect animals sold in California!
From: United Animal Nations, by Nicole Forsyth, UAN President and CEO
Did you know that here in California, dogs, cats and other pet animals, particularly young ones, are being sold at flea markets and swap meets in terrible conditions? These animals are often kept in crowded pens or cages that are unsanitary, without food and/or water, in extreme heat and direct sunlight. They are handled by shoppers and purchased on impulse.
In addition, puppies and other animals are being sold along roadsides. Sometimes, just days after being sold, the animals die of serious illness — illness that could have been prevented if the animals had received proper care from those breeding them for profit. Not only do the animals suffer, but the people who purchased them are left heartbroken as well.
How you can help
State Assemblymember Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) has introduced legislation to address these issues and prevent this cruelty in California. AB 1122 will prohibit the sale of animals along street corners and in flea markets. The legislation does not affect animal shelters, rescue groups and other organizations that have mobile adoptions. AB 1122 is sponsored by the California Animal Association, of which United Animal Nations is a founding member.
This legislation is being heard in an Assembly committee next week, and your voice is urgently needed!
